CA Ban on Texting Results in 70% Reduction
According to a report by the Automobile Club of Southern California the Jan 2009 ban on texting has resulted in a 70% drop in texting while driving. California was the sixth state to enact such a ban. The decline indicates that laws do have the potential to change the behavior of motorists and reduce potentially dangerous distracted driving.
The Auto Club’s study is the first to examine the effects of a texting ban anywhere in the U.S.
The study was conducted by actually monitoring motorists at varying times of day and on different types of roads with a reported 16,500 cars examined over a 6 month period.
According to a study by AAA, over 80 percent of people polled supported a ban on texting while driving and showed the same 80 percent rating distracted driving as a serious threat to their safety.
