Research in Motion Takes First Step Toward New Browser for BlackBerry

Jim Holding Torch Mobile 300x200 Research in Motion Takes First Step Toward New Browser for BlackBerryIt was announced today that Research in Motion (RIM) acquired Torch Mobile.  Torch Mobile provides software applications and services for mobile and embedded devices.  Applications include the well-received Iris mobile browser for mobile phones, set-top boxes, mobile Internet devices, portable media players, Ultra-Mobile PCs and other embedded devices.   The Iris mobile browser is based on the WebKit rendering engine and it is specifically designed to function in resource-constrained environments.

The browser offers tabbed browsing, touch, and a skin able UI, all of which would be welcome additions to a new browser for the BlackBerry.  With screen sizes increasing for most of the newer BlackBerry smartphones, the need for a more robust browser is evident.
