Robocalls Terminated
Effective September 1st, 2009 robocalls from those annoying machines will be illegal!
What does this mean? Simple, any company that places unsolicited or automated calls to consumers in an attempt to sell products will be breaking the new law and subject to a fine of up to $16,000 per call.
As with all things in life, there are exceptions for banks, phone companies and charities are still allowed. Interestingly enough, the ban on robocalls was first approved by the Federal Trade Commission in 2008.
“American consumers have made it crystal clear that few things annoy them more than the billions of commercial telemarketing robocalls they receive every year,” FTC Chairman Jon Leibowitz said in a news release.
The FTC says after Tuesday (Sep. 1st) consumers can report questionable robocalls by visiting its complaint Web site or by calling 1-877-382-4357.
