Girls Storm Drain Fracebook Trapped Girls Update Facebook Status Instead of Calling for Help

How can you tell when social networking has replaced normal reality with an altered and potentially dangerous one?  For two girls, ages 10 and 12, in Australia that moment came today when they became lost in the storm drains under the town of Adelaide and instead of using their cell phones to call for help, they updated their Facebook status to reflect their precarious situation.

Thankfully for them, one of their Facebook friends was online and had the presence of mind to actually call emergency services instead of “poking” them for more details.

This is the second story to come out of Australia in as many days.  The previous one involved a gentleman whose idea of fun was using his BlackBerry to photograph girls private parts on escalators (Story Here).

I don’t know about you, but if I ever travel to Australia, I’m not drinking the water.
